„Gap Year“ is a recipe; an instruction for building a useless tool for connecting two tectonic plates that have drifted apart. It is a song to serenade telephone lines and the echoes of lost intimacy that linger while we have already transformed into a new, wild version of ourselves.

in the pit of my stomach, at the center of the peach of my existence
what is there more beautiful than a living thing in transformation?
i send water down the rift, i rinse it thoroughly
i boil the liquid for an hour, simmer for twelve
scrape the bottom of the skillet
pour the reduction into a mold
cast a dagger

i’ve been feeling stabby lately, backstabbing myself in the checkout line
i’ve had dozens of dreams where i die in a shootout at a supermarket
always wondering who will call you with the bad news

over the telephone, a beep is the same over a meter or a mile
they smoothed out the crackling in the line
now every call could be coming from inside the house
i have become my own duplex, semi detached from reality
and from wherever your hand is attached to your arm
i am the dispatcher sending several "hello? hello?"s into the headset
professionally keeping my voice from cracking
i am pouring resin into the fractures of this gap year
